AN ADVICE COLUMN WRITTEN BY A COMPLEX QUADRIPLEGIC
Waddup! So, after twenty years of chronic disability a lot of people have helped me on my path. From doctors to friends, from counsellors to support staff, everyone has been so kind. And, honestly, it’s not like I feel indebted, I mean much of the help I’ve received, there hasn’t been much choice in it. Still, I’ve always wanted to give back to the world in some way. Pay it forward as they say. And as such, here we find ourselves.

Mark is a writer at heart, with his eyes on a career as an advertising copywriter. A published author, an advice columnist, he also studies marketing and creative writing at university. A certified life coach, marketing consultant and very active blogger. On a more personal note, Mark advocates for both adversity and chronic illness; stemming from his own twenty-year battle with quadriplegia. He is wheelchair-bound, non-verbal, has a tracheostomy tube and is 24/7 ventilator dependant. His dream is to one day get better and ride a bicycle around Australia,
This experience forms the foundation of Adversity Answered, Mark’s core project aimed at helping others both understand and overcome adversity.
Mark inspires not by lecturing, but simply by existing and engaging — making the inspiration feel organic rather than performative
UNIQUE VOICE
A model of adaptation — changing course is intelligent navigation, redesign, creative expression, not failure
Reframed perspective — struggles feel smaller through the lens of greater challenge
Deeper empathy — Mark’s reliance on others deepens his understanding of vulnerability, also compassion
A challenge to assumptions — confronts reader biases about capability, limitation, and what a “qualified” voice looks like
Lessons in redefining identity — Mark rebuilt himself, guiding others through reinvention
Authenticity — there is little room for pretence when you’ve faced “this” level of vulnerability, so readers receive unusually honest, unfiltered counsel
A reminder of human capacity — ultimately, reading Mark’s column quietly reinforces that human beings are far more adaptable, creative, and enduring than we tend to give ourselves credit for
What Twenty Years of Quadriplegia has Taught Me
Welcome the person you are becoming not the one you are leaving behind. You are changed. No more excuses, no more hiding, no more playing small. For this is the big show. You are the prize. Face your truth, be ruthless, grind, execute. Sunshine through the trees
Having navigated dependence and care dynamics, Mark offers unusually thoughtful guidance on human connection and boundaries.
Having lived through prolonged uncertainty, Mark brings a hard-earned patience with slow progress — one readers can genuinely absorb and carry into their own lives. His attunement to small victories and everyday moments offers a quiet but powerful shift in how readers perceive their own. And for those living with disability, seeing someone like Mark occupy a position of wisdom and authority is not just refreshing — it is profoundly affirming.
I read Mark’s stuff because I love seeing the world through another set of eyes. Seeing the world through Mark, is sometimes painful, but mostly humorous and interesting. His insight is twenty-twenty and it is a privilege to read his audacious thoughts!

An intelligent and articulate individual, that is discerning in his observations of life and the challenges he faces daily as a quadriplegic. His quirky humor and honesty make for interesting and at times very poignant reading.

No beating around the bush with Mark. Not a bullshit person honest as they get.
